Ecclesiastes 10:15  The labor of fools wearies them, For they do not even know how to go to the city!

Giving is an act of worship.

One of the greatest aspects of giving is it steers you away from the spirit of idolatry.

What you cannot give possesses you. It’s an idol.

Giving is an act of trust, those who do not give demonstrate lack of trust in God.

If God is not with you, you gather to scatter-you can build in 20 years and use in a single day.

You must build your roots in the spirit.

-            I have a deep conviction in the power of giving.

-            I believe in tithes and offering.

-            As your pastor, I must teach you what is right, I leave it up to you to discern and obey.

-            There are people who do not give, and they say they love God with all their heart; the truth is not in themselves, and they are lying even to themselves. Actions speak louder than words.

-            Everything that you see in the physical, started in the spiritual. The battles of job started in the spiritual, then we see the manifestation in the physical [Job 1].

-            Giving is an attitude; it’s not about how much money you have.

·       This is not a prosperity gospel that focuses on give so that you can receive. I want to teach about the spiritual implications of giving . The biblical position about giving.

·       I may emphasize so much about tithes and offering as acts of sacrificial worship and obedience to God rather that ‘business transaction with God.’

It is of most importance for you to understand why you give.

Stop and ask yourselves

-            Why do you give tithes and offering?

-            Why do you give love offering?

-            Why do you generally give in ministry.

-            Every church has have a session where they ask for tithes and offerings; I don’t know a church that doesn’t collect offerings. Why so?

Tithes is a covenant with God, its not just enough to do something just because you think it’s right, but you must understand what you are doing,

Tithes, offering and first fruits.

Understanding tithing , offering, first fruits is an act of our tenets of our faith….that will stand as a reference of our biblical belief about tithing, offerings, first fruits.

We must know and have confidence derived from our knowledge of the word of God.

Believers means prosperity is different from the means of the non-believers. [devils tells Jesus to bow to him, and he would give I’m wealth; he was saying that he had authority to get someone to prosper]

Matthew 4:8-10 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. ⁹ “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”  ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’^[a]”

·       Jesus did not dispute that the devil could give wealth, he rebuked the devil for asking to be worshipped[ Deuteronomy 20]

-            Once you become a Christian you cannot prosper like unbelievers, your prosperity must be according to the covenant with GOD.

-            You can go and have a covenant with the devil, and he will give you material wealth, and you can make a covenant with God and he will prosper you.

-            The devil interferes with your covenant with God to get you out of your path to prosperity.

-            He devices ways that you may worship him, that you may turn materials into idols, or that you may simply disobey God and get off the path of prosperity [Jer 29]

Tithes and offering are not given just because the church  needs money, some churched preach it as such but one church mistakes does not generalize the entire church.

Offering

Hebrew for Offering: ‘Minchah’: Gift, Tribute, Present/gift, Sacrifice

Tribute :Payment to higher authority.

Sacrifice: Surrender something of value, costly.

Gift- Meant to show appreciation.

He gave a fruit-something you have received as payment or harvest from input.

Cain gave the fruit on the ground: offering fruit- he didn’t like it. God was not looking for things; he was looking for something deeper.

FIRST OFFERING ACCEPTED BY GOD:- ABEL

Gen 4:2-6 Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. ³ In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. ⁴ And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, ⁵ but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

⁶ Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? ⁷ If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.

Abel: he brought a fruits of his work. He gave the first born of the flock and their fat. [later you will know how the fat was important when the sons of Eli get it against God’s will.

Abel's offering was quantitative/qualitative: He had goats, sheep, and different animals: he gave the first born of each animal. He gave the fattest, without changing with lean ones.

The lord had respect on able-he didn’t look at the offering; he looked at the man and his actions. He gave each generously.

1.     God accepts an offering that shows the greatest honor: quantities and qualitative.

2^nd offering accepted by God in the bible:-NOAH

Gen 8:15-22 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. ²¹ And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination^[a] of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.²² “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat,Winter and summer, And day and nightShall not cease.”

Noah covered us all with his offering. For the good he had done.

Noah did not pray he gave an offering.

God knew the imagination of man is evil but because of Noah’s offering I will never destroy

What was so special about  Noah offering?

-            Scarcity. There were only pairs left after the flood. Only the animals in the ark.

-            He took what was rare and scarce and offered to God.

-            He didn’t give one, he gave every clean animal and bird.

-            He said I don’t care what is coming but first let me give to God.

-            He saved humanity with his offering.

-            He didn’t just give-quality he gave quantity-He Showed great honor to God.

-            It was rare: sacrifice, tribute, gift.

-            He could have sacrificed crocodiles, mosquitoes, lions, snakes and other bothersome creatures who had given him trouble in the Ark-but they couldn’t qualify as a show of tribute to the King of Kings.

GOD MADE A COVENANT WITH NOAH NEVER TO DESTROY US WITH FLOOD.

 OFFERING ACCEPTED BY GOD ABRAHAM.

Gen 14:17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

¹⁸ Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, ¹⁹ and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most  High, Creator of heaven and earth.²⁰ And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

-            Lot was unwise-he could give uncle the option to choose. But he chose the green valleys of Sodom and Gomorrah [Green valleys are not always the wise choice]

-            Lot is captured, by foreign kings.

-            Abraham and his 318 servants fights 5 kings and beats them and collected all what they had. They recovered lot’s stollen properties too.

-            Abrahams instantly becomes the owner of all that the five kings owned.

-            Out of nowhere Abraham has a visitor-Melchizedek-King of Salem. Who blesses Abraham and Abraham gives him a tenth of all that he  had.

This is the First time tithe appears in the scripture. One tenth: 10%

They were not as mathematical as we are, so they Counted 1to10 and gave the tenth count. [gather all tenth and gave the collections.]

Abraham gave a tenth of all: shields, shoes, helmets, belts, cows, donkeys, gold, silver, slaves girls, boys….

He gives to Melchizedek

He was not one of the five kings, he didn’t fight, or loose. He just showed up and was given a tithe.

He waits and walks in and says,” Abraham !!!! he comes with bread and wine-------communion----introduced Abraham to God the most high.

Let us give attention

Melchizedek- King of righteousness. Silas means a good speaker. [Jesus said, let us do this to accomplish all righteousness’]-

Hebrews 7:1-3 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

² To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

³ Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

He occupies two offices:

-            King of Salem [Peace], king of a city called Salem- civic leader, secular leader, president of a nation

-            He is a priest of God most high. He represents the nation of Salem and kingdom of God.

He goes between the natural and the spiritual

-            Abraham tithe is a tribute to a secular king and to a priest. Tax and offering.

-            Abraham established the principle that we give taxes and offering to God.

When Abrahm gave to Melchizedek, he established the basis we give taxes, and offerings to God. Abraham gave to both God and to the state.

-            He did not give to Melchizedek, he gave to God and to the state through Melchizedek,

-            When you pay taxes ,do you think about the prosperity of the tax collector, do you think how he will prosper.

Why would you think your tithes goes to the pastor? If he has a good system, it will directly go to the work of God. Not his wife or children or his own home.

But be prudent and wise as a steward of what God has given you, chose a church and ministry that has good system. The soil you plant your seed matters.

Tithes begins before Abraham had a child, before Isaack was born, 450 years before the Levitical laws of moses. Tithes and offering is not based on Levitical law but on the priesthood  of Melchizedek.

This is very important because the Levitical laws were rewritten by Jesus Christ but the priesthood of Melchizedek was only confirmed by the Christ.

Importance: 1^st offering in the bible, given to a living person. Not God as burnt offering.

·       Abraham tithes, nothing is burnt and given to a human being and he receives.

It sets the foundation

Other areas, the offering is burnt.

Melchizedek receives the offering and we don’t see him again. He seems to have been used by God to introduce tithes.

God had to introduce a principle, and he had to do this.

Hebrews 7 Melchizedek the Priest.7 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, ² and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” ³ Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.

⁴ Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! ⁵ Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people—that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. ⁶ This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. ⁷ And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. ⁸ In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. ⁹ One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, ¹⁰ because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor.

Jesus Like Melchizedek

¹¹ If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? ¹² For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. ¹³ He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. ¹⁴ For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. ¹⁵ And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, ¹⁶ one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. ¹⁷ For it is declared:

“You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”^[a]

¹⁸ The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless ¹⁹ (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

²⁰ And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, ²¹ but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:

“The Lord has sworn    and will not change his mind:    ‘You are a priest forever.’”^[b]

²² Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.

²³ Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; ²⁴ but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. ²⁵ Therefore he is able to save completely^[c] those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

²⁶ Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. ²⁷ Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. ²⁸ For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

2^nd offering of Abraham:

-            A very special, he complains that he had no child. God promises children but Abraham asks a question.” How shall I know that I shall inherit it.”

Genesis 15:2-10  But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit^[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” ³ And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so, a servant in my household will be my heir.”

⁴ Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” ⁵ He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring^[d] be.”

⁶ Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

⁷ He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.”

⁸ But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?”

⁹ So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”

¹⁰ Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. ¹¹ Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away.

-            God makes a promise, Abraham asks for a proof….God could have said I have said, you just need to believe

-            But God says: bring me heifer, ram, goat three years old each,,,,,,,,,,,,this is the

This is the first time in the bible that God demanded an offering………..

·       You want to know I will keep my words, bring this……

·       Does it mean that there are times God will ask for something specific?,,,,,,yes

·       Not that God wanted meat….he wanted to see commitment, and honor

·       There are times God will demand something specific, because you have demanded something specific

God is about to put a covenant with Abraham.

Goat, heifer, ram, cut them into two-------specific instruction

When Abraham did it, He is put out in a tranche; able to watch but not move, God wanted him to see,

In Abraham culture- you sign covenants by having animals cut into pieces. In his culture you swore a covenant before the king  by walking across animals cut into pieces. As a show to the king that if you break it, you should be cut like the animal.

God was saying , If I disregard his covenant, he will not be God anymore.

-            That covenant was based on specific things he demanded from Abraham.

-            There are things God does with people on one-on-one basis. People will not understand.

-            As a Christian, there is a point of covenant where God will demand something in order to confirm something .

-            If Abraham denied that he would have gone through life without confirmation. Just waiting on the promise. 90,96 and in the 99^th, God comes back and he said, next year a time like this.

Whether you like or know it, God will do it. There are times when you do not know what will happen, but he is in control. Sarah loved, but God had made a covenant-he gave a the baby anyway.

Not because of the quantity but the specificity.

-            God will give you instructions that will not make sense but the specificity and your adherence to the instruction will bring the specific blessing.

3^rd offering of Abraham

Genesis 22:1–19 Abraham Tested. Sometime later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied. ² Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

·       If you were Abraham, you would think God is going crazy.

·       If I sacrifice Isaack, I’m too old, Sarah cannot have other children. She laughed then, now even me I would join her.

·       Later the bible says he did it because he knew God and trusted God. Heb 11:17-19.

He decided, it’s up to you God. I will just obey.

He went ahead, in the process God spoke to him, ‘look, there is a ram’

Sometimes God will test you out with an offering. He wouldn’t take it, but he will test you. U will think I

I have covered these offerings in the Sequence from the first offering in scripture going on.

1.     Abel.

2.     Noah.

3.     Abraham, 3 offerings.

a.      Tithes to the King of Salem.

b.     God asks for specific offering.

c.      God tests Abraham.

The law

-            When the jews said the law-torah-instructions, the law is more of instruction than legislation

-            The law was God’s instruction to Israel. It was not Israel legislation.

-            The law/Torah established a priesthood, sacrifices, offerings including tithing.

Order of Melchizedek, then the order of Aaron-Levitical,  both received tithes but they are not one and the same.

-            Abraham was tithing under the Melchizedek order; Melchizedek was not a jew.

-            When Israel came up, Moses established a priesthood, Levitical priesthood and he commanded tithing.

Understanding unchanging Principles of God and practice in the realm of the spirit

To understand the law, you must know bout. Principles & Practice.

1.     Principle,-Truth that never changes,[the wages of sin is death Romans 6:23]

2.     Practice.-Truth as it applies to people from time to time [God said, to Adam, “for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die”-Adam ate and he did not die] they ate, God came calling they were naked [Genesis 2:16–17]

-       Adam was supposed to die but the animal died instead, to get the skin to cover them.

-       New Testament: you are Alife and you have been sinning/ because Jesus died for you.

-       God’s word never changes to accommodate us, his principles will never change // practices can change // His personalities does not // His principle does not.

-       Worshiping the Lord God is a principle that never changes, how we practice changes including using modern instruments and sounds.

PRINCIPLE 1: Don’t come before me empty-handed.

-      Today you cannot bring a goat to church, but honor the principle by bringing money, deeds, shares….

-      If you got nothing, ask the brother next to you if they have anything and hold their hands honor God together.

Deuteronomy 16:16 Three times a year all your men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles. No one should appear before the Lord empty-handed:

-       Did God consider the poor-do not come empty.

-       If u don’t have anything; if you don’t have a ram, bring a lamb, if you have nothing, join the one who has something.

He wanted them to know to come with a tangible sense of honor, if you got nothing join someone.

PRINCIPLE 2. BRING THE TITHES TO THE PLACE ASSIGNED FOR MY DWELLING?-church.

Deuteronomy 12:5-6  But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:⁶ And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks:

-            The exaltation is an authorized receiver. Legal and with good management structures.

-            Many other churches are good sowing grounds- look for integrity.

-            The church Must have a system of accountability; this is not money to go to an individual’s pocket.

-            There must be an order in the church, treasury departments and good organization on money management.

-            If you cannot trust that the church will use your tithe in a biblical way, go to a church you can trust.

PRINCIPLES OF USE OF THE TITHES:

biblical way to use the tithe and offering in the church

Numbers 18:21-24  “I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting. ²² From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die. ²³ It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. They will receive no inheritance among the Israelites. ²⁴ Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord. That is why I said concerning them: ‘They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.”

-            Levites were church workers. Was meant to be used by the Levites for the upkeep for those who work in the house of God.

-            Levi was the First born of Jacob :Levi- priest: when moses sought God, Israel said Moses we cannot go near God. Moses was a Levite-his tribe becomes the priestly family-Arron older brother becomes the first priest. They had no land.

-            Not all Levites were priests, but they all worked in the house of God. Cleaned, slaughtered, light candles-all work in the house of God.

-            In churches, there are many who serve but they are not all pastors, or inheriting.

-            It is fair to take care of the one who spends all the time taking care of you.

-            The disinherited, the fatherless, strangers, people who didn’t have the source of livelihood.

Deuteronomy 26:13- Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands, nor have I forgotten any of them.

-            Levite.

-            Foreigner

-            Fatherless

-            Window.

Acts 4:35 says they sold property, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone who had need.

-            Church money is used to help the needy.

Church Using offerings for outreach

1 Corinthians 16 The Collection for the Lord’s People

16 Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. ² On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. ³ Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. ⁴ If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me.

-            In this case the offerings were used for the missionary work.

can I just splint my tithes to different places/uses?

-            NO It must be whole, not a fraction here and a fraction there. You cannot say I will send this little to this church and that to another organization.

-            However, the bible leaves room for you to help and bless others even other priests.

-            The bible teaches us to be generous at all times. While all offerings must be brought to the house of God, we are taught to be generous with what God has given us.

Obedience

-            Giving in the house of God is an act of obedience to the word of God.

Exodus 19:3-6 Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: ⁴ ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. ⁵ Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, ⁶ you^[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

Leviticus 27:30-33 “‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord. ³¹ Whoever would redeem any of their tithe must add a fifth of the value to it. ³² Every tithe of the herd and flock—every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod—will be holy to the Lord. ³³ No one may pick out the good from the bad or make any substitution. If anyone does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute become holy and cannot be redeemed.’”

Matthew 23:23  “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

·       Earth belong to me. 10^th of what you own is mine.

·       Government doesn’t trust you, it mostly deducts at the source.

·       God trusts you and leaves you to decide.

·       The tithe is mine, don’t just pay it anywhere….you cannot pay taxes to anyone, rent to the shopkeeper next door

·       You cannot divert the tithe, [to the poor,,,,,,no take it to the authorized place where it can be collected.

·       In Israel, it was sent to the temple.

·       You are not helping……you cannot divert tax and decide to use part of it to fix roads.

·       It’s not you place to determine that if the gov is not using your tax you fix the roads and not pay taxes.

Breaking Covenant by Withholding Tithes.

Malachi 3:6 “I the Lord do not change. So, you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. ⁷ Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’⁸ “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.

“But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. ⁹ You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. ¹⁰ Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. ¹¹ I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. ¹² “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.

CHOSE THIS DAY TO BE A COVENANT GIVER

 You will chose today and declare that “ I will be a covenant giver, if I come and I have no money I will join my faith and tribute with the one who has given me.”
